Located near Taiwan and bordering the South China Sea, the Philippines has found itself surrounded by growing threats from China. For help pushing back on Beijing, officials are racing to strengthen ties with the United States, a mutual defense treaty partner that has its own strategic interests in the region.
On the heels of a major military base deal between Manila and Washington, I traveled to the Philippines to observe Army exercises and learn why the country is becoming more and more important on the world stage.
